Artwork Essay:

The theme of bullfighting holds a central place in Pablo Picasso’s work, tracing back to his childhood in Málaga and remaining a powerful motif throughout his artistic life. The figure of the picador — the horseman who enters the arena first — symbolizes both courage and fatality. It is not merely a depiction of the arena — it is a powerful expression of inner tension between life and death, strength and inevitability. Through the figure of the picador, Picasso speaks of humanity itself — of a man entering into battle with fate.

This lithograph is notable not only for its content but also for the story of its creation. Originally conceived in a monochromatic palette, the work was later radically reimagined by Picasso, who expanded its range to 24 colors, making it one of the most vivid and chromatically rich lithographs in his graphic oeuvre. It is for this reason that the plate bears two dates: a mark of evolution, and a deliberate return to a theme that remained essential to the artist.
