An exceptionally high-quality KPM Berlin Germany porcelain plaque depicting Madonna della Seggiola after Raphael. It depicts Mary embracing the Christ child while sitting in a chair as the young John the Baptist devoutly watches. The Madonna della Sedia (ca. 1513) is one widely considered as one of the most important Raphael’s paintings. The plaque is in original mid 19th century gold gilded wooden frame. There is provenance information with names and dates written in old German on the back of the frame. The date reads “30 July, 1857”, the rest I can’t read. 1등 품질, 우수한 상태 Manufactured in ca. 1840 Size: Including the frame: 43 x 37cm Only the plaque: 27 x 23 cm It was observed in the 19th century that paintings, the great masterpieces of the old masters, were deteriorating, and there was no technology available to restore or preserve them. To safeguard the images of these remarkable works, it was decided to transfer them onto porcelain. The KPM Berlin porcelain manufactory dedicated decades to creating the finest renditions of these masterpieces on porcelain, and no other factory in the world could rival the quality of their work. This plaque exemplifies the very best of what was produced during that era. |
